In 2004 a golf tournament was held, in memory of Morrie Miller, with the hope of raising $25,000 to benefit the Winona Senior High School football team. The tournament raised over $75,000 that first year and enabled the event organizers to help support a multitude of Winona area youth sports organizations for both boys and girls.
The Morrie Miller Athletic Foundation was formed in 2006 as a non-profit organization. The events were expanded to include a 5k run/walk, a banquet featuring a keynote speaker, and the golf tournament. Community support has grown significantly each year and in 2012, a record $306,000 was raised for youth athletics.
The Foundation continues to donate thousands of dollars to various organizations and is especially proud to have initiated the Community Track at Paul Giel Field, completed in 2010, in partnership with Cotter Schools, Winona Area Public Schools and Winona State University.
ALL parents of the community are invited to attend this FREE event! Cotter Athletics is hosting a presentation by Rod Olson, coach, author, and founder of the Coaches of Excellence Institute, on Dec. 4 at our Saint Cecilia Theater on the Cotter Campus from 6-7:30 p.m. Coach O captures the attention of parents with a program that is specifically geared toward their needs as role models for their children. Rod's message is right on target for those seeking guidance on how to most positively influence young people's lives through competitive youth sports.
Morrie Miller was a marvelous athlete and a marvelous human being. He would be particularly pleased to know the events established in his honor continue to expand and help a variety of youth athletic programs for both boys and girls in our community. These events have been a huge success because of you. We appreciate your continued support.
